Translay (screen translation app for macOS and iOS)
Last updated: December 2025

Translay is a screen translation app for macOS and iOS. We take privacy seriously and follow principles of least privilege, minimal data, and on-device processing, ensuring your screen content is used only for instant translation and is never stored, misused, or shared.

1. Overview

Translay's core function is to display translation results directly on your screen so you can quickly understand its content. From the start, the app is designed with privacy in mind. All major features run locally on your device, with no reliance on cloud services and no collection of personal information.

2. Use of screen access permissions

Depending on the platform, Translay uses system-provided screen access capabilities only when you explicitly authorize and actively trigger a translation.

  • macOS: may request the system “Screen Recording” permission to capture the image content of a user-selected region for text recognition.
  • iOS: does not capture screen content in the background. The app only temporarily processes the current screen image provided by the system (such as a screenshot) when you actively trigger translation (e.g., via Shortcuts/Intent).

These capabilities are used only when you actively trigger translation and are limited to what is necessary for instant translation. Translay does not access screen content in the background and never accesses screen content without your knowledge.

3. On-device translation

Translay uses only the system-level text recognition and translation capabilities available on your device.

All text recognition and translation are performed locally on your device, without reliance on cloud services or external servers.

Translay does not upload screen content, screenshots, or recognized text to any server, nor does it transfer, disclose, or share such data with any third-party translation services or individuals.

4. Data we access

When you actively trigger translation, Translay temporarily accesses only the following data:

  • Image content from the user-selected region or current screen (for text recognition)

Translay does not access or collect:

  • Audio data
  • Continuous video recording data
  • Personal identifying information
Note: On iOS, Translay only processes the current screen image provided by the system (such as a screenshot) when you actively trigger it. It does not continuously capture screen content in the background.

5. Purposes of data use

Captured screen data is used only for the following purposes:

  • Recognizing on-screen text on the local device
  • Translating recognized text into your chosen target language
  • Presenting translation results as overlays or result views to preserve a consistent reading experience

This data is not used for analytics, behavioral tracking, advertising, marketing, or any purpose unrelated to translation.

6. Data storage and retention

Translay does not store any screen images or recognized text used for translation.

Translay may collect limited, anonymous usage and diagnostic data to help improve app stability, performance, and core functionality.

This data may include information such as app launches, feature usage events, and crash or performance diagnostics. It does not include screen content, recognized text, screenshots, personal identifiers, or any information that can be used to identify a specific user.

All screen images and recognized content are processed temporarily in device memory only, and are not written to disk or persistently stored.

Once a translation task is completed or you close the relevant feature, the related data is immediately released from memory and not saved anywhere.

7. Data sharing and disclosure

Translay does not share any screen images or recognized text that are temporarily processed for translation with any third party.

The app does not upload screen content, recognized text, or translation results to servers, and does not use them for model training, data analysis, or any external purpose.

8. User controls

All screen access behavior is explicitly triggered by the user.

You can manage or revoke related permissions at any time in system settings:

  • macOS: After revoking the “Screen Recording” permission in System Settings, Translay can no longer access screen images.
  • iOS: You can manage Translay-related permissions in System Settings and disable or delete translation-triggering shortcuts at any time.

9. Compliance

Translay complies with applicable privacy and data protection laws and follows the principles of least privilege and minimal data.

Because Translay does not collect, store, or share personal data, the app does not involve centralized storage or cross-border transfers of user data.

If relevant laws change or app functionality is adjusted in the future, this policy will be updated in a timely manner to remain compliant.

10. Children's privacy

Translay is not specifically designed for children, but it is usable by people of all ages.

Translay does not proactively collect, store, or share any personal information, including children's personal information. Because the app does not involve account registration, identity verification, or age checks, it cannot identify or distinguish a user's age.

Therefore, Translay treats all users equally and does not collect or process personal data, regardless of age.
